Explore the mountains together, with confidence
Our Active Programme regularly includes guided mountain hikes. Accompanied by experienced mountain and hiking guides, you can explore selected routes throughout the region.
Preparing for your mountain hike

With the right preparation, your mountain hike can be a safe and rewarding experience in nature.

Mountain hikes take you into higher, sometimes alpine terrain. Before setting off, always check the current trail conditions and the requirements of your chosen route.
  • Consider the difficulty, elevation gain and walking time, and choose a route suited to your fitness level and experience.
  • Pack sturdy mountain boots, protection against cold and wet weather, enough drinks and a first-aid kit. Walking poles can help reduce strain on your knees during longer descents.
  • Check the latest weather forecast before you leave, as conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
  • Let someone know your planned route and expected return time.
  • Follow the mountain safety guidelines and check for any trail closures before your hike.
  • More demanding routes may require sure-footedness and a good head for heights. Always check the specific requirements in the route description.

The best time for mountain hikes
The mountain hiking season generally runs from June to October, depending on snow conditions. Snowfields may remain at higher altitudes in early summer, while early snowfall can affect autumn routes. Always check the latest weather and trail conditions before setting off.

Stopping at an alpine hut en route
Some mountain hikes pass alpine huts serving food, either directly along the trail or just a short detour away. They're lovely places to rest on the ascent or descent. Opening times and closing days vary with the season and weather, so check your options before heading out.
