Climate and Resources in Gsiesertal Valley-Welsberg-Taisten

Using our natural resources consciously and responsibly.

Sustainability often begins with small everyday choices: how we deal with waste, food and energy, and how we respect the peace and quiet that make our valley special.

When each of us starts with small changes, together we can make a difference. Here you'll find practical tips on these topics and learn how we approach them in our region.

Reducing waste, valuing food

Sorting your waste

You can sort and dispose of your waste correctly at the recycling centres in Welsberg and St. Martin in Gsiesertal Valley, or through the weekly collection of residual and organic waste.

  • Separate your waste: paper, glass, plastic bottles, packaging and metal can be taken to the recycling centre, along with electrical appliances and batteries.
  • Residual waste: use the designated bins or waste bags.
  • Organic waste: use the municipality's free paper bags for disposing of organic waste.

Reducing your waste

The best waste is the waste we never create. Small everyday choices can help reduce the amount we throw away.

  • Use a reusable water bottle instead of single-use plastic: our tap water is safe to drink.
  • Avoid unnecessary packaging whenever possible.
  • Before buying a product, consider whether you really need it and will use it.
  • Take any waste you produce while out and about to the next bin or back to your accommodation, where you can dispose of it correctly.

Making the most of food
Food is valuable. From growing it to serving it, every meal involves time, work and resources. We can all help avoid wasting it.
  • Buy as much food as you really need.
  • Use up leftovers rather than throwing them away.
  • When eating out, order what you expect to eat.
  • Ask whether you can take any leftover food home.

Many local restaurants work to reduce food waste. Being mindful about what we eat helps prevent waste and encourages appreciation of local produce.

Water from our local springs
Our tap water comes from protected springs and is safe to drink. Instead of buying bottled water, you can refill your reusable bottle straight from the tap or at public drinking water fountains while you're out exploring.

Being mindful of energy, light and noise

Some of the things that make our valley special are easy to overlook until they're gone: careful use of energy, dark night skies and genuine peace and quiet. When planning future infrastructure and events, we also consider light and noise pollution, recognising their potential effects on the nocturnal behaviour of wildlife and on the restful atmosphere you come here to enjoy.

You can help too: switch off lights and heating when you leave your room, and take a moment to appreciate the quiet rather than filling it with noise.

Travelling with climate awareness

Travelling to and from your holiday destination can account for a significant share of your holiday's carbon footprint, depending on the distance and mode of transport. Whether you arrive by train, continue by bus or choose to explore by bike and public transport instead of driving, sustainable mobility is an important topic in our region. We've dedicated a separate page to it.

If you're interested in the emissions associated with travelling by car and your stay in the region, you can use the myclimate CO₂ calculator to estimate your emissions.

Working together to keep nature free of litter
We work closely with local initiatives and people who care about the region, including through community clean-up days. If you'd like to lend a hand, you're welcome to join one of the next events. They take place every spring.
