Ski Touring in Gsiesertal Valley-Welsberg-Taisten

Discover the winter mountains away from the ski slopes.

Gsiesertal Valley is one of the best-known and most popular valleys for ski touring in the Pustertal Valley. Numerous routes start at the head of the valley near St. Magdalena, leading into the surrounding mountains towards peaks and passes such as Hoher Mann, Rotlahner, Regelspitze, Hochkreuzspitze and Kalksteinjöchl. What makes ski touring here special becomes clear on the ascent. The routes lead through snow-covered forests and across wide alpine pastures, before opening up to views across Gsiesertal Valley and the surrounding mountains. Along some routes, you'll also find alpine huts open during winter, offering a welcome place to stop.

Choosing the right tour depends on your fitness, experience and the current conditions. Snow cover, weather and avalanche conditions must therefore be assessed afresh before every tour.

Before your ski tour
Good planning and the right equipment help you enjoy the winter mountains more safely.

Ski touring takes you into unsecured alpine terrain and requires experience, careful route planning and appropriate equipment.

Before every tour, check the latest weather forecast, snow conditions and avalanche bulletin. Adapt your route and destination to the conditions and your own abilities.

Essential avalanche safety equipment includes an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel. If you have limited experience assessing snow and avalanche conditions, consider joining a guided ski tour with a qualified mountain and ski guide.
