Culture and Tradition, Preserved

Cultural heritage worth keeping alive.

Culture and traditions are an essential part of the identity of Gsiesertal Valley-Welsberg-Taisten. For us, preserving them doesn't mean keeping everything exactly as it has always been. It means valuing what has been passed down, sharing knowledge and allowing traditions to evolve naturally with the times.

Together with local associations, cultural organisations and people from the community, we work to protect cultural heritage, support living traditions and develop cultural experiences responsibly. When organising events and sharing our culture with visitors, we also take care to make it accessible without staging it especially for tourism.

Protecting cultural heritage and bringing it into view

For us, preserving cultural heritage means protecting historic places and cultural landmarks, helping people understand their significance and supporting access to them in the long term. Working with local partners, we aim to ensure that these special places remain part of everyday life and that the knowledge associated with them is passed on.

One important example is Welsperg Castle, whose preservation and cultural use we support together with the Kuratorium Schloss Welsperg, the organisation dedicated to caring for the castle. We also want to draw attention to smaller, lesser-known heritage sites. Historic places such as the Goala Mill are included in walking routes and our visitor information, helping to make them more visible and accessible to local people and visitors alike.

Experiencing our cultural heritage

Our Active Programme offers opportunities to discover the region's cultural heritage and living traditions. Guided visits to heritage sites and insights into local customs help visitors learn more about the history and culture of Gsiesertal Valley-Welsberg-Taisten. This allows you to experience local culture in the places where it genuinely belongs, rather than through activities staged especially for tourists.

Advance registration is required for the Active Programme. This helps us plan group sizes carefully and ensure that each place is visited with consideration. At cultural sites and events, visitor guidelines also encourage respectful behaviour towards our cultural heritage and the people who live here.

Local associations at the heart of cultural life

Local associations play a vital role in keeping traditions, knowledge and community spirit alive in Gsiesertal Valley-Welsberg-Taisten. Brass bands, farming organisations, sports clubs and cultural associations all contribute to village life, passing on skills, customs and shared experiences from one generation to the next.

As a tourism organisation, we work closely with these groups and want to strengthen our cooperation further. Simpler communication, shared resources and mutual support can help make voluntary work easier and create opportunities to develop projects together.

Organising events responsibly

Festivals and events are an important part of social and cultural life in our villages. At the same time, we want to gradually reduce their environmental impact and the resources they use. Some events in the region are already organised as Green Events, including the Gsiesertal Alpine Hut Festival and the Aperitivi in Welsberg. We want to share what we've learnt and support other associations and event organisers who would like to take a similar approach.

To help with this, we've developed a guide to organising more sustainable events, offering practical advice on planning and running events with greater care for resources.
