Family Hikes in Gsiesertal Valley-Welsberg-Taisten

Hiking the whole family enjoys.

Family-friendly hikes in Gsiesertal Valley-Welsberg-Taisten are a pleasure in every season. In spring, the Talblickweg leads through meadows and past traditional farms in Gsiesertal Valley. Summer is the time for walks to alpine huts serving food or shorter sections of the Gsieser Almweg 2000. In autumn, colourful woodlands invite you to slow down and enjoy a gentle walk.

There's plenty to discover away from the alpine pastures, too. In Taisten, four stops along the Legends Trail, a route of around four kilometres, tell stories from long ago. Around Welsberg, the circular castle walks combine time outdoors with views of Welsperg Castle.

In winter, short walks lead through snowy landscapes. Some trails take you to alpine huts open during the colder months, with the chance to sledge back down to the valley where conditions and the route allow.

Whether you fancy a short circular walk, a themed trail or a hike to an alpine hut, our route overview helps you find the right outing for your family. Filter by walking time, difficulty and pushchair suitability. After all, it's often the little discoveries along the way that stay with you longest.

A winter tip
A family of four sits on their sledges at the Pichl ski lift, ready to set off downhill together.
Walk uphill, sledge back down to the valley

Some trails leading to alpine huts open in winter can be combined with a sledging trip: walk uphill together, stop at the hut for something to eat, then enjoy the sledge ride back down to the valley.
You'll find suitable routes and information on where to hire a sledge on our dedicated sledging page.

Important: in South Tyrol, helmets are compulsory for everyone when sledging. Make sure you include one in your plans.

A few simple tips for more relaxed family walks.
  • Choose the right route: check walking time, elevation gain and difficulty. You can also filter the route overview for pushchair-friendly walks. For hiking trails and forest tracks, we recommend an all-terrain pushchair with larger, sturdy wheels, as even pushchair-friendly paths can be uneven or steeper in places.
  • Allow time for discoveries: when walking with children, the estimated walking time is often just a guide. Plan for breaks and a little extra time for whatever catches their interest along the way.
  • Food and refreshments: check the opening times and closing days of alpine huts and places serving food, but bring plenty of water and a few snacks with you as well.
  • Getting to the starting point: many walks can be reached by bus and public transport. With the Südtirol Guest Pass, you can use eligible public transport services free of charge throughout South Tyrol.
  • Weather and equipment: check the weather forecast and trail conditions before setting off. Remember suitable footwear, sun protection and waterproof clothing.
